RE: Where to Go in Oregon

Frenchglen...Steens Mountain...Malheur Wildlife Refuge area should meet your criteria.
Only jabbott has nailed all of your requirements. Most of the responses are spectacular places but certainly not solitude and remote camping. Go to Steens Mountain. You will get Oregon as you have never seen it before and will never forget. It is a long ways from nowhere but one of the most beautiful places on earth.

RE: Need help too old to tow

All libraries carry all the NADA books and would be glad to help you find your unit. Same for most credit unions. If you don't want to deal with the sale you can take it too a consignment lot. Most larger cities have them. But it is a tough time to sell a trailer.

RE: Hanging your clothing

Our former trailer had the same thing and we used the kids hangers for most things. A few larger items got turned a little sideways.

RE: A word of THANKS to all senior RVer's

I'd prefer to be called experienced over senior. :)
My father-in-law used to say "I'm not a dirty old man. I'm a sexy senior citizen."

RE: Outside shower in colder weather.

Totally agree with canoe on top. If you are just going to be there over the holidays, you don't need to worry. We regularly stay were it gets down to the mid 20s and have never had anything freeze up but the outside hose. Low 30s that shouldn't even happen. Don't sweat the insulation. If you are concerned about the hose, just disconnect it at night and drain the water completely out of it and then reconnect in the morning.

RE: black hills campground

When you call for Rafter J Bar for reservations just tell them you want seclusion and a big space. They are great about meeting your needs.

RE: Battery in travel trailer

My 2003 Wanderer needs a battery to smooth and help regulate the output. Manual says connecting shore power without battery can damage control circuits in fridge and water heater. So be sure your converter is better than mine before running shore power with no battery!
My last trailer was the same. Manual said you could damage systems without a good battery. Haven't checked the manual on our Springdale about this.

I do like the idea but advertising might be a problem. How would you get the word out?

RE: Legal width info

Fed DOT max width = 102"
Fed DOT max height = 13'6"
This is correct 99% of the time. Width of the body--they don't count mirrors, awnings, etc. Here in OR there are a very, very few narrow roads that have an 8' width max but they are rare and I've never heard of anybody with a RV being ticketed. They are just too narrow for big semi's.

RE: Pick (a) unheated garage or (b) outside with cover and heat

Batteries are good to -50 or so with no worry so why pull them? I just unhook the negative and in six month when I hook it back up there is always enough charge to get things going. Why go through the unnecessary steps?

RE: Towing 6800# with an F150? Should I go 3/4 ton instead?

Look at the specs. I seriously think you will be way over the limit of the 150. Bet you will be at least 8000# loaded, maybe more. Most people think you need to be around 80% of max and you will be way over that and very unhappy. I've been there!!

Note: Starcraft is not closing. It is closing one plant. Downsizing is the name of the game right now.

RE: supercenter pricing

That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. You should get it delivered for 25% to 30% off retail with no additional charges. Run, don't walk, away from that deal. Check Keystone's site if you like the rig. They just rebadge the Freedom Lites. You'll find the same one under a Keystone brand. Then find the dealer for it. You'll get a much better deal.

RE: Our first trip, need advice

I go with the others- 50 mph average. No way you will do 450 miles plus unless you drive very long hours. For me, the whole point of RVing is to enjoy the ride.

RE: Lincoln City, oregon advice

If you can bring the RV it would be a great way to explore OR. However the time of year you are planning will be VERY rainy, windy and stormy. Not real cold but wet! I would consider the Lincoln City KOA (or Otis--same place) because it is a little bit inland with a lot of trees. It will break much of the windy storms blowing in off the ocean.
However, the decision is yours. It's a long way to bring the RV for a month. I'd probably fly for that short of time.

RE: Duro Tires... Again!

Maybe the radials would have been OK. I know the bias tires are crap. I just gave up the battle and bought four Transmaster radial tires. I know that is what Duro probably hopes we'll do but I'm too old to fight these kind of issues. Thanks for continuing to get the word out--maybe they will get it or go under....

Go for it and get there early. You better plan on getting to Rafter J Bar on the 2nd so you can get to the monument early.

RE: Improving Forum?

Hey, I have another bright idea. All of those people that want to improve this forum can go out and start their own. If you don't like what is here, then go do it the way you want. Why keep complaining and expecting others to do it your way? The great thing about the internet is that anybody can pretty much do what they want-- so do it! And if your forum turns out better than this one, then I'll join it.

RE: yellowstone trip

Another vote for FB if you want hookups. Yes it's crowded but no more so than many parks. We had a site that backed into the trees. Being we have a read living room it was great.
Don't miss the Tetons if possible. We like it better than Yellowstone.
